KAWARA
KAWARA(Roof tiles) not only serve a physical purpose of protecting houses from wind, rain, and fire, but also have symbolic meanings as lucky charms that ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune, health, and longevity. Oni-gawara (demon tiles) ward off evil spirits, tsuru-kame (crane and turtle tiles) represent longevity and marital harmony, aoi-nami (blue waves tiles) represent peaceful living, and matsu-kawa-bishi (pine bark tiles) represent prosperity. Various patterns and motifs have been used on roof tiles to pray for happiness, and they have been used on roofs, walls, and even as interior decorations.
